It took the Reign just two minutes to score the matches first goal of the game. Coming off forward Nahomi Kawasumi’s corner kick, defender Kendall Fletcher gave Seattle a 1-0 lead and the club never looked back after that goal. Fletcher capped off her first goal of the season with a stunning backflip to add to her impressive goal.
The teams would head to the halftime break with the score still remaining 1-0.
Seattle’s second goal of the night would come shortly after halftime. In the 48th minute, Naho would grab her second assist of the night off another corner kick. This time it was midfielder Keelin Winters getting on the end of it to make the score 2-0.
The Spirit did their best to apply pressure on Hope Solo and the Reign defense, but could not produce any positive results. Finally in the 73rd minute, the Spirit would get their break. After a handball in the box, Diana Matheson stepped to penalty spot and converted for her third goal of the 2014 season. Matheson’s goal made it 2-1 and raised the stakes significantly higher.
Seattle wasted little time responding with the final goal of the match. It took Jessica Fishlock just seven minutes to dash the hopes of a Spirit comeback. Making quite the name for herself by dishing our her third assist of the night, Naho delivered a quick little pass to Fishlock, who took a brilliant first touch which set her up perfectly to lace a shot from outside the 18-yard to the bottom far corner.
Even with a 3-1 lead, the Reign continued to shoot, but Spirit goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris was able to prevent any more damage from occurring.
With this win, the Reign improve to 2-0-0 on the season and move into first place in the league standings. For the Spirit, their record is now 1-2-0.
Seattle will take on the 1-1-0 Houston Dash this coming Sunday at Moda Health Pitch in Seattle, Washington. Game time is scheduled for 7pm Eastern Time.
